MD means meshes deep, or mesh depth. A 400 MD fishing net has approximately 400 mesh openings counted in the depth direction from the upper edge of the netting panel to the lower edge. It describes a count, not a metric height.
For that reason, 400 MD does not mean 400 meters. The actual expanded or hanging depth also depends on mesh size, how the mesh opening is defined, the hanging ratio or stretching condition, and the construction of the net.
